TONGEJI ISLAND DEVELOPMENT AND SECURITY: FEDERAL GOVERNMENT'S STRATEGIC INITIATIVES

Tongeji Island Development and Security: Federal Government's Strategic Initiatives" - A report on the efforts and concerns expressed by government officials regarding the development and security of Tongeji Island, Ogun State, Nigeria.

Daniel expressed concern over the abandonment of oil-rich Tongeji Island and emphasized the Federal Government's imperative to retain control of the island. Tongeji Island, situated in Ipokia LGA of Ogun State, boasts stunning waterfronts, scenic landscapes, and is a mere five-minute drive from Port Novo in Benin Republic. With its natural beauty, including palm/coconut trees, white sand, and recent crude oil discoveries, the island holds significant potential for tourism and resource exploitation. Given its proximity to Benin Republic, both the Ogun State and Federal Governments need to proactively develop and harness the island's abundant natural resources.

Daniel revealed that the Federal Government and the committee are formulating strategies to safeguard Tongeji Island, drawing parallels to the loss of certain areas in Cross River to Cameroon. While specific strategies were not disclosed due to security concerns, Daniel expressed confidence in the Navy's capacity to execute the plans. Additionally, he acknowledged the Navy's need for a jetty in Badagry, Lagos, emphasizing the island's strategic importance to the nation's wealth.

During the oversight visit, Daniel highlighted the Nigerian Navy's potential and the necessity to support its well-trained personnel. He emphasized the need for spare parts acquisition and urgent construction of a jetty in Badagry to combat illicit activities. Daniel also expressed gratitude for President Bola Tinubu's approval of a supplementary budget to support the military and navy, ensuring transparent disbursement of funds.

Rear Admiral Mustapha Hassan disclosed plans to visit Tongeji Island with Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, to enhance the island's protection. This visit underscores the government's commitment to the island's development and security. The Senate committee, comprising various senators and the committee clerk, is dedicated to overseeing and enhancing the Nigerian Navy's operations and capabilities.
