Benue APC Caucus Affirms Unity and Leadership Amidst Factional Claims

The Benue State All Progressives Congress (APC) National Assembly Caucus has firmly rebutted claims of factionalism within the state's APC, affirming Senator George Akume's leadership and dismissing allegations of two opposing factions.

The Benue State All Progressives Congress (APC) National Assembly Caucus has refuted claims suggesting the existence of two factions within the state's APC. They assert that Senator George Akume, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, remains the party's leader in Benue, aligning with the APC's principles and ideology. This clarification was made in a statement released on Sunday by the caucus, signed by its spokesperson and the House of Representatives Deputy Spokesperson, Philip Agbese.

Reports emerged on March 24, 2024, indicating the involvement of the APC in resolving the ongoing political feud between Benue Governor, Hyacinth Alia, and SGF Senator George Akume. The party issued warnings to the supporters of both politicians, urging them to withdraw their legal actions or face disciplinary measures at the national level. The conflict between the governor and the SGF reportedly divided Benue APC members, leading to disputes over loyalty.

Furthermore, on March 29, Governor Alia inaugurated a new working committee for Benue APC, emphasizing the party's unity under his leadership. However, the Benue APC has been embroiled in a crisis following the removal of the state APC Chairman, Austin Agada, by his Ehaje council ward, and a subsequent court order restraining him from assuming the role of state party chairman.

In response to insinuations of factionalism within Benue APC, the Benue NASS caucus dismissed such claims as the antics of "desperate comedians." They urged APC members to view those purporting to be new party leaders as mere entertainers, emphasizing their commitment to upholding the party's principles and hierarchy. The caucus maintained that according to the party's constitution and directives from the National Working Committee, Comrade Austin Agada remains the state chairman.

The lawmakers highlighted their adherence to the party's doctrine of command and their respect for established leadership structures. They emphasized the unique approach they take in representing their constituencies, avoiding claims of sole leadership within their domains. Instead, they acknowledged the presence of influential figures like Senator Ameh Ebute, Chief Audu Ogbeh, and Chief John Ochoga within their federal constituency, underscoring the collaborative nature of their political engagements.
