The Bishop of Sokoto Diocese of the Catholic Church, Bishop Matthew Kukah, recently expressed concern for many Nigerians who are unable to travel outside the country. He made these remarks during a keynote address at the 3rd annual national public lecture in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State. Bishop Kukah sympathized with Nigerians who face numerous challenges and are unable to venture beyond their immediate surroundings, let alone travel to other parts of Africa or the world.

He acknowledged that every country has its own problems, but emphasized the need for Nigeria to democratize and develop as a nation. Bishop Kukah posed a difficult question: how can Nigeria achieve democracy and development? He pointed out that the so-called civilized world has been built on the exploitation of Africa over the past 200 years. Nigeria, like other nations, must find its own path to development, taking into account its unique circumstances.

Bishop Kukah acknowledged that democracy can be used to develop Nigeria, but stressed the importance of addressing fundamental issues before people can fully appreciate democracy. He highlighted the need to resolve the issue of a "bread and butter mentality," as without economic stability, democracy may appear to be a mere game of chance.

Furthermore, Bishop Kukah noted that those responsible for Nigeria's problems are not exempt from the consequences. He stated that everyone in Nigeria is aware of the problems the country faces, and even the individuals responsible for these problems do not experience peace.

In conclusion, Bishop Kukah emphasized that every country has its own set of challenges, and it requires both citizens and purposeful leaders to address and overcome these issues.
