GOVERNMENT OF DR CONGO PROHIBITS OPPOSITION-LED DEMONSTRATION AMID ELECTION IRREGULARITIES

The Democratic Republic of Congo has been embroiled in controversy following recent elections, with the government announcing a prohibition on an opposition-led demonstration aimed at protesting alleged irregularities.

The government of the Democratic Republic of Congo announced on Tuesday that it will prohibit an upcoming opposition-led demonstration scheduled for Wednesday, which was planned to protest alleged "irregularities" in the recent elections. The opposition leaders, including Martin Fayulu and Denis Mukwege, had notified the governor of Kinshasa about their intention to organize the march in a letter published on Saturday. However, with the final election results still pending, the government stated that the protests would disrupt the electoral process.

Interior Minister Peter Kazadi informed journalists that the government cannot accept the planned demonstrations, as they are perceived to undermine the ongoing electoral process. The opposition leaders expressed their dissatisfaction with the election, denouncing it as a "sham" and vowing to protest against the irregularities observed during voting. Moise Katumbi, another candidate, called for the annulment of the elections.

The recent elections in the Democratic Republic of Congo involved almost 44 million eligible voters out of approximately 100 million inhabitants. Due to logistical challenges, the voting period was officially extended by a day and even continued until Christmas Day in some remote areas. The opposition has claimed that there was "total chaos" during the voting process. Preliminary results released by the electoral commission indicate that incumbent President Felix Tshisekedi is leading with 80 percent of the approximately 1.8 million ballots counted so far.
