Guidelines and Enforcement for New Retirement Age and Length of Service for Teachers in Osun State

Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, has issued a directive emphasizing the necessity of adhering to approved guidelines for teachers to benefit from the new retirement age and length of service in the state's public schools.

Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, has emphasized the importance of adhering to approved guidelines as a prerequisite for teachers to enjoy the new retirement age of 65 years old and length of service of 40 years in the state's public schools. This directive was communicated in a circular issued by the state's Head of Service, Mr. Ayanleye Aina, on Tuesday in Osogbo, the state capital.

The circular underscored that individuals interested in benefiting from the increased retirement age must fully comply with the stipulated guidelines. Among the requirements outlined in the guidelines for teachers to qualify for the scheme is being within the education cadre recognized in the service scheme.

Furthermore, it specified that eligible officers must be registered with the Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria, medically fit as confirmed by a qualified medical doctor, and not under any disciplinary action. Additionally, eligible officers are expected to apply six months before reaching the age of 60 or completing 35 years of service, whichever comes earlier.

The guidelines also mandated that applications must be endorsed by the Head Teacher/Principal of the eligible officer and addressed to the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Education, among other stipulations. However, it emphasized that the extension period would not be considered pensionable.

The circular directed the Ministry of Finance and the State Universal Basic Education Board to immediately halt the payment of salaries to individuals who are currently benefiting from the new retirement age without meeting the specified conditions.

In a concluding remark, the circular reiterated the persistence of the conditions outlined in previous circulars and urged strict adherence to the guidelines for individuals to enjoy the new retirement age and length of service benefits. It also called for wide circulation of the circular and strict compliance by relevant Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) of the government.
