Governor of Benue State Warns Local Government Chairmen Against Financial Mismanagement

Benue State Governor, Hyacinth Alia, has issued a strong admonition to local government chairmen in the state, cautioning them against financial mismanagement and reminding them of the watchful eye of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

Benue State Governor, Hyacinth Alia, issued a stern warning to local government chairmen in the state regarding financial mismanagement, cautioning them against engaging in such practices as the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) would closely monitor their activities. Additionally, the governor advised the chairmen against leaving their respective council areas.

 

Governor Alia emphasized the importance of accountability, integrity, and transparency among the council chairmen during a two-day workshop on 'Responsive Local Government Leadership for Effective Local Government Administration in Benue State.' He stressed that Internal Generated Revenue (IGR) and taxes should not be treated as personal funds but rather utilized to enhance the welfare of the people.

 

Addressing the social contract between the chairmen and the people, Governor Alia urged them to prioritize human development and ensure that the local government system functions effectively. He warned against any surprises, noting the oversight role of the EFCC in scrutinizing their actions.

 

The governor underscored the significance of the workshop's theme in enhancing service delivery and management at the grassroots level. He urged the chairmen to identify challenges and propose solutions, aligning their efforts with the state's developmental goals.

 

Governor Alia emphasized the autonomy granted to the local government system and outlined strategic projects earmarked for implementation in various LG areas. He urged the chairmen to remain committed to their duties, urging them to focus on making a positive impact and improving governance within their jurisdictions.

 

The Special Adviser on Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Dennis Akura, explained that the workshop aimed to equip administrators with the necessary skills and knowledge for effective governance, emphasizing the importance of excellence in their roles.
