Olufemi Lawson, speaking on Sunday, expressed support for the recent steps taken by President Bola Tinubu, regarding the reduction of government spending. He emphasized the need for reforms in light of the economic realities in Nigeria, stating that such measures are crucial for the advancement of the interests of ordinary Nigerians.

Kolawole Oluwadare, the Deputy Director of the Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP), acknowledged the reduction in recurrent expenditure as a positive step. However, he highlighted that more needs to be done to address the overall cost of governance. Oluwadare stressed the importance of addressing areas such as security votes, pensions for former governors, and other frivolous expenses at both the federal and state levels.

Auwal Ibrahim Musa, the Executive Director of Civil Society Advocacy Centre (CISLAC), commended the reduction in travel expenditures but urged President Tinubu to look beyond this area. He questioned the necessity of maintaining a budget line for the office of the First Lady, particularly during challenging economic times. Musa emphasized the need to reduce the size of the cabinet and implement the recommendations of the Steve Oronsaye Committee to streamline government agencies and parastatals.

Debo Adeniran, the Executive Director of the Centre for Anti-Corruption and Open Leadership (CACOL), supported the reduction in government spending and called for a similar approach to be adopted by all branches of government, including the legislature and judiciary. He advocated for austerity measures and emphasized the importance of utilizing existing resources rather than unnecessary spending on new items. Adeniran also expressed support for a unicameral legislature, citing the perceived inefficiency of the current bicameral system.
