FEDERAL GOVERNMENT AND NLC AGREE TO CONTINUE TALKS ON POST-SUBSIDY REMOVAL PALLIATIVES

Federal Government and NLC Agree to Continue Talks on Post-Subsidy Removal Palliatives, Averting Planned Strike

The Federal Government and the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) have reached an agreement to continue discussions regarding post-subsidy removal palliatives for workers before the 21-day ultimatum issued by the NLC. Both parties have also pledged to find solutions to the key demands presented by organized labor before the deadline. The Minister of Labour and Employment, Mr. Simon Lalong, made this announcement after a closed-door meeting with the NLC in Abuja on Monday.

The meeting was called by the minister to prevent the planned strike by organized labor and address other issues. The NLC had threatened to embark on a strike from September 21 due to the hardships faced by the masses following the removal of fuel subsidy. Lalong stated that fruitful discussions were held on the items previously presented by the NLC to the Federal Government, and many of these items were still under consideration before reaching a final agreement.

The minister emphasized the government's commitment to addressing the concerns raised by workers and acknowledged the valid grievances that led to the recent crisis. He urged the NLC to consider the economic reality of the nation while taking actions to ensure the well-being of workers. Lalong called for open-minded and constructive dialogue between organized labor and the government to bridge any gaps and promote economic growth while securing sustainable progress for the nation.

NLC President, Mr. Joe Ajaero, confirmed that both parties have agreed to continue deliberations to reach a meaningful agreement before the ultimatum expires. They also discussed the issue of the coup executed by the Nigeria Police against the National Union of Road Transport Workers, which resulted in the detention of their democratically elected national officers. Ajaero expressed hope that progress would be made on the various issues, such as the implementation of wage awards and the functioning of refineries, before the ultimatum ends.

He assured that the NLC would be available whenever invited and that both parties would work towards achieving their objectives before the ultimatum deadline, even if it is just one day remaining.
