Excessive Heat and Climate Concerns: Challenges Faced by Residents of Kwara State

The residents of Kwara state, particularly in the city of Ilorin, are facing significant challenges due to excessive heat caused by Climate Change and delayed rainfall.

Residents of Kwara state, particularly in Ilorin metropolis, the state capital, are currently suffering from excessive heat attributed to Climate Change and delayed rainfall for the year in parts of the state. The prolonged heat has caused discomfort and health risks among the populace, exacerbated by irregular power supply from the distribution company, resulting in sleepless nights and profuse sweating.

Moses Ojo, a farmer interviewed, expressed concerns that the heatwave may adversely affect agricultural cultivation and food production for the year. Despite taking measures such as bathing before sleeping, many residents, including Ojo, find themselves sweating profusely at night due to the intense heat.

Bunmi, a resident along Asa Dam, lamented the acute shortage of water caused by poor power supply, making it difficult to sleep at night. She recounted bathing four times in the evening to alleviate the discomfort caused by the excessive heat, exacerbated by the ineffectiveness of rechargeable fans due to power outages.

Reports gathered by Vanguard Correspondent reveal that many residents in Ilorin stay awake all night due to limited power supply from IBEDC, even with the use of rechargeable fans, which often deplete batteries within a few hours into midnight. The rotational power supply exacerbates the situation, leaving residents grappling with the oppressive heat throughout the night.

At a Climate Journalism Workshop organized by a private radio station in Ilorin, Dr. Saudat Salah Abdulbaki emphasized the crucial role of journalists in raising awareness about Climate Change. Dr. Abdulbaki highlighted the impact of Climate Change on aquatic and human lives, citing effects on food security, such as the high cost of scarce proteins like fish and cattle due to poor yield. She also noted the disappearance of forests and trees due to urbanization.

Another expert in Climate Change, Mr. Rasheed Yusuf, attributed the current heatwave to deforestation, emphasizing the failure to replant trees after cutting them down. Yusuf highlighted the adverse effects of industrial pollution and bush burning on the environment and climate. He lamented the lack of a culture of tree planting among Nigerians and advocated for widespread tree planting and replanting to mitigate the impacts of Climate Change and protect the environment.
