AMMC Demolishes Unauthorized Structures in Games Village, Abuja: Reclaiming Land and Upholding Due Process

The Abuja Metropolitan Management Council (AMMC), operating under the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA), recently conducted a demolition operation targeting unauthorized structures at Plot 1765 in Games Village, Abuja.

The Abuja Metropolitan Management Council (AMMC), under the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA), has carried out the demolition of unauthorized structures situated at Plot 1765 in Games Village, Abuja. Following the exercise, Mr. Nasiru Isa, the Director of Finance and Account at AMMC, briefed reporters, stating that the plot had been designated for the council’s Senior Staff Housing Estate.

Isa clarified that the demolition process, aimed at reclaiming possession of the land, adhered to due process. The plot was initially allocated to a company responsible for constructing Games Village on a temporary basis. However, a directive issued by the Presidency in 2008 instructed the management of the village not to make any external alterations or modifications to the premises.

This directive, signed by Mr. Abbas Umar, the former Director (special duties) in the Presidency, was on behalf of the Ad-hoc Committee on Sale of Federal Government Houses in FCT. Despite the directive, the management of Games Village allegedly disregarded these instructions in their management of the estate.

Isa further highlighted that unauthorized structures, including a private school and mechanic workshop, were erected on the plot, contrary to its temporary designation. The AMMC had issued several notices to the management of Games Village prior to the demolition, supported by corresponding documentation justifying their actions.

The demolition exercise, which culminated in the removal of these structures, had been ongoing for approximately four months. The AMMC also addressed a petition filed by the Games Village Association regarding the disputed plot. Assistant Director of Urban Affairs, Mr. Abubakar Makama, affirmed that the AMMC Management provided evidence of ownership through documented correspondences to address the petitioners' concerns.
