Passengers using the Murtala Mohammed International Airport in Lagos have voiced their concerns about the confusion and lack of proper information following the directive from the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, to relocate airlines to the new terminal at the airport.

Keyamo had surprisingly directed all airlines to relocate from the airport by October 1, 2023. However, the Federal Aviation Authority of Nigeria forcefully relocated the international carriers to the new facility.

This move, while aimed at airport improvement and development, has raised worries among international students and passengers. These students, who rely on frequent flights to their home countries, fear potential disruptions and inconveniences due to this relocation, especially since many have already booked their flights in advance.

One passenger, Adekemi Awomolo, expressed her distress over the sudden and unplanned nature of the notice, causing unease among passengers. She emphasized the potential disruptions for airline operations due to the abrupt relocation directive and suggested a gradual reduction in the number of airlines operating at Terminal One for a smoother transition.

Another passenger, Segun Odutayo, expressed disappointment and frustration about the timing and lack of consideration by the government and aviation ministry in ensuring a smooth travel experience. He called for a minimum of four months' notice for any flight changes and proactive alternative plans for travelers.

Bukola Adebayo, an international student, shared his worries about the impact on his travel plans, as flight times changed multiple times since he booked. He is concerned about disruptions to his academic plans and resumption day.

Dr. Kingsley Nwokoma, President of the Association of Foreign Airlines and Representatives in Nigeria, expressed apprehensions about Terminal Two's capacity to accommodate all foreign airlines effectively. He pointed out that network punctuality was crucial for passengers who had purchased tickets months in advance, and disruptions could lead to financial losses and potential lawsuits.

He also raised concerns about safety implications, as large aircraft park at Terminal Two, and previous measures had been taken to address safety concerns.

An industry stakeholder, Prof Obiora Okonkwo, mentioned that there is no manual for relocation, emphasizing that it should primarily concern international airline operators and not passengers.

Overall, the sudden airline relocation has created uncertainty and raised various concerns among passengers, international students, and industry stakeholders.
