The Commissioner of Police, Ekiti State Command, Dare Ogundare, has instructed a comprehensive investigation into the recent attack by hoodlums on Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital, Ado Ekiti, and the forcible removal of a corpse. Following this incident, the Chief Medical Director of EKSUTH, Prof Kayode Olabanji, announced that the workers who had initiated a strike in response to the attack have now suspended their industrial action.

The Police Public Relations Officer, Sunday Abutu, revealed that the CP held a meeting with the involved parties and confirmed that the police have commenced investigations into the individuals implicated in the hospital attack. The assailants, believed to be associated with a drivers’ union, reportedly targeted the hospital following the death of a patient who was related to one of them. They allegedly assaulted medical staff, damaged the Accident and Emergency Unit, and forcibly removed the deceased's body.

In response to the attack, some EKSUTH workers, including members of the Association of Resident Doctors, initiated a strike, demanding improved security and the apprehension and prosecution of the perpetrators. The police spokesperson stated that normalcy has been restored at the hospital, with law enforcement personnel deployed to ensure the safety of individuals and property.

The CP's directive for a thorough investigation has led to the summoning of individuals linked to the incident for questioning. Additionally, a meeting involving the union, EKSUTH management, government representatives, and the deceased's family was convened to seek a resolution to the matter.

During a meeting with hospital union leaders, EKSUTH CMD, Prof. Olabanji, reported that approximately 20 individuals involved in the assault and vandalism of hospital facilities are currently in police custody. He expressed gratitude to the hospital workers’ unions for suspending the strike and emphasized the importance of security in retaining healthcare professionals in the country.

The Chairman of the EKSUTH Chapter of the Association of Resident Doctors, Doctor Famous Adeyemi, disclosed that the relevant unions have collectively agreed to halt the ongoing strike and have urged the Ekiti State House of Assembly to enact legislation prohibiting attacks on healthcare workers while they provide essential medical services to the public.
