Edo State APC Primary Election Dispute: Idahosa Urges INEC to Uphold Legal Precedents

In the aftermath of the governorship primary election of the All Progressives Congress in Edo State, tensions escalate as Hon Dennis Idahosa, an aspirant in the election, addresses a letter to the chairman of INEC.

The aftermath of the governorship primary election of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Edo State continues to unfold, with Hon Dennis Idahosa, an aspirant in the election, addressing a letter to the chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). In the letter dated March 4th, 2024, written by Wole Olanipekun (SAN) and marked WOC/ABJ/VOL.01/074/2024, addressed to Professor Mahmud Yakubu, Idahosa urged INEC not to accept any other candidate apart from himself, who he claims emerged victorious in the primary election.

Idahosa pointed out a legal action, Suit No.FHC/ABJ/CS/274/2024, between himself, Sen. Monday Okpebholo, the APC, and the INEC, where he is contesting the candidacy of the party. He emphasized the need for INEC to take cognizance of this ongoing legal matter.

In his lawsuit, Idahosa asserted that he won the primary election held on February 17, 2024, which was monitored by INEC, and that there was no justification for the supplementary election ordered by the party leadership. He argued that the election on February 20th was a continuation of the February 17th exercise, and thus, the results of the initial election should not be disregarded.

Idahosa highlighted discrepancies in the reported results, noting that despite his victory on February 17th, a subsequent completion exercise on February 22nd allegedly favored Sen. Monday Okpebholo. However, he contested the legitimacy of this supplementary election and raised concerns about the process.

Furthermore, Idahosa referenced past instances where INEC handled similar situations, such as the governorship elections in Osun and Kogi States. He urged INEC to follow precedent and recognize the results of the February 17th primary election as conclusive.

Idahosa's letter emphasized the importance of maintaining fidelity to legal precedents and ensuring that the ongoing judicial process is respected and not prejudiced by premature actions from INEC.
