Geometric Power's Aba Project: Accelerated Power Supply and Economic Implications

Geometric Power's subsidiary, Aba Power Ltd, is poised to expedite the supply of electricity to consumers in the Aba Ring-fenced Area, surpassing the initially planned timeline.

Aba Power Ltd, a subsidiary of Geometric Power, is set to commence supplying power from one of its three turbines to consumers in the Aba Ring-fenced Area ahead of schedule. Originally planned to start supplying power to commercial customers 13 days after commissioning, the company's Chairman, Professor Bart Nnaji, a former Minister of Power, has directed engineers to expedite the process, ensuring power delivery to the people this weekend.

The Geometric Power 188 Megawatt thermal plant and Aba Power company, tasked with distributing electricity to nine of the 17 local government areas in Abia State, were commissioned by Vice President Kassim Shettima on behalf of President Bola Tinubu at the Osisioma Industrial Layout in Aba, Abia State. This occurred 24 hours after the first turbine was turned on.

Officials from the National Control Centre (NCC) in Oshogbo, Osun State, were initially scheduled to inspect the Geometric Power facility next week as part of technical requirements. However, they will now arrive this week, facilitated by Professor Nnaji's influence and network.

When one of Geometric Power’s three turbines goes into commercial operation this weekend, it will supply 47MW, nearly doubling the 25MW currently received by the Aba Metropolis and its environs from the Niger Delta Power Holding Company (NDPHC) through the national grid. According to Engineer Cliff Eneh, an energy consultant and former senior engineer with NEPA and Texas Power and Light Company, the second turbine will further increase power supply to the Aba Ring-fenced Area to 94MW, meeting the city's energy needs and stabilizing power supply.

Eneh emphasizes the significance of having generation and distribution firms like Geometric Power with state-of-the-art facilities, as they contribute to addressing Nigeria's power challenges. Major firms like Neimeth Pharmaceuticals Plc in Lagos have expressed intentions to relocate their manufacturing plants to Aba, contingent on substantial improvements in electricity supply.

At the commissioning of Geometric Power facilities, Power Minister Adebayo Adelabu disclosed the Federal Government's intention to closely monitor the performance of the Geometric Power group, considering it as a potential business model for the development of Nigeria's power sector.
