President Tinubu's Economic Summit: Addressing Food Security and Economic Stability

In a recent press briefing, Minister Mohammed Idris emphasized Nigeria's potential to achieve food self-sufficiency and even become a net exporter of food items.

The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, declared at a press briefing in Aso Villa, Abuja, that Nigeria has the capacity to feed itself and potentially become a net exporter of food items. He emphasized that the government has decided to halt food importation, aiming to bolster domestic food production and potentially export surplus to other nations. The minister also highlighted the commitment of state governors to collaborate with the President in enhancing investments in agriculture, encompassing both crop production and livestock development, to ensure food security for Nigerians.

In a related development, President Tinubu convened a meeting with state governors to address the prevailing challenges in the country. Since the removal of subsidies under his administration, the economy has experienced a downturn, leading to increased hardships and a surge in living costs. This situation has prompted public demonstrations and a rise in criminal activities, contributing to heightened tensions in the country.

In response, President Tinubu has directed his economic team and relevant government officials to seek solutions to alleviate the situation. Additionally, the Special Presidential Committee on Emergency has been authorized to release approximately 102,000 metric tonnes of assorted food items, including rice, maize, and millet, to address the rising cost of food items, insecurity, and other economic issues. The meeting aimed to devise strategies to mitigate these challenges and restore stability.
