Edo State Deputy Governor Philip Shaibu expressed his belief that Governor Godwin Obaseki should have engaged in discussions regarding his succession plan rather than resorting to what he perceived as intimidation. Shaibu made these remarks during an interview on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily program. He officially declared his intention to run for the state governorship election on September 21, 2024, under the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), emphasizing that it is his constitutional right to contest the governorship office in the state.

Shaibu highlighted the need for open dialogue and communication, stating that if he were to become governor and his deputy wished to contest, the deputy would have the right to do so. He expressed his willingness to engage in discussions and negotiations but emphasized that he would not yield to intimidation. Shaibu also lamented the difficulty in distinguishing between loyalty and constitutional rights among some of the governor's supporters.

Despite the strained relationship between himself and the governor, Shaibu reiterated his loyalty to Governor Obaseki. He expressed hope for a resolution to the situation and emphasized the importance of fair and inclusive leadership.
