FORMER INEC CHAIRMAN CALLS FOR PROBE INTO ALLEGED POLITICAL INTERFERENCE IN 2023 ELECTION RESULT VIEWING PORTAL

On Channels Television’s Inside Sources Programme, former chairman of INEC, Prof. Attahiru Jega, raised concerns about the alleged interference of "reckless politicians" in the election result viewing portal, IReV, during the 2023 general election.

During an appearance on Channels Television’s Inside Sources Programme, former chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Attahiru Jega, raised concerns about the alleged interference of "reckless politicians" in the election result viewing portal, IReV, during the 2023 general election. Jega called for a thorough investigation into the matter, highlighting the challenges faced by INEC during the presidential election held on February 25, 2023. The commission encountered difficulties in immediately uploading the election results on the IReV portal, prompting public outcry.

Jega expressed his belief that despite INEC's efforts to ensure transparency and integrity in the electoral process through the introduction of technology, certain politicians sought to undermine these efforts. He emphasized that during his tenure at INEC from 2011 to 2015, and possibly up to 2023, some politicians were determined to outmaneuver the commission's initiatives. According to Jega, these politicians were adept at circumventing and bypassing legitimate measures put in place to enhance the integrity of the electoral process.

The former INEC chairman stressed the need for greater transparency regarding the events surrounding the IReV portal, advocating for a comprehensive public inquiry into the matter. He expressed his conviction that the failure of the IReV portal, despite the confidence expressed by the current INEC chairman, Mahmood Yakubu, may have been influenced by the infiltration and disruption caused by certain politicians. Jega suggested that INEC should thoroughly investigate the issues related to the IReV portal once all court cases are resolved.
