BANDIT ATTACKS AND KIDNAPPINGS IN ZUMA AND GARAM COMMUNITIES: SECURITY AGENCIES' RESPONSE UNDER SCRUTINY

The recent spate of attacks and kidnappings in Zuma and Garam communities in Nigeria has raised concerns about the security situation in the region.

Zuma community in Bwari Area Council of the FCT was reportedly attacked by suspected bandits on Wednesday morning. During the confrontation between the bandits and the police, two officers were injured while attempting to repel the criminals and secure the area. The injured officers were taken to the hospital, and the whereabouts of the kidnapped residents remain unknown.

These attacks follow a series of reported incidents in the area, including kidnappings and bandit attacks on Garam community in Niger State, which shares a boundary with Bwari community in the FCT. In one tragic incident, the wife of a pastor from the Redeemed Christian Church of God was reportedly killed after receiving ransom demands from the bandits regarding her missing husband and children.

Further reports indicate that bandits entered Garam on Tuesday, causing panic with sporadic gunshots and reportedly abducting three individuals. Additionally, a man described as an Abuja Electricity Distribution Company staff was reportedly kidnapped, along with his wife and nephew, by bandits who forcefully entered their house and escaped with them on motorcycles into the bush.

Efforts to reach the police authorities, including the Force Public Relations Office and the FCT Police Command, as well as the Defence headquarters, to respond to the attacks and provide information on the security agencies' actions proved unsuccessful, as text messages were not responded to and calls went unanswered.
