The Association of Community Pharmacists of Nigeria (ACPN) has highlighted malaria as a significant public health challenge in Nigeria, citing an estimated 68 million cases and 194,000 deaths. Mrs Chioma Idoko, Chairperson of the ACPN Benue State Chapter, referenced the World Health Organization's (WHO) 2022 report on Malaria in Nigeria to underscore the severity of the issue. She expressed concern over the disease's prevalence and its impact on the nation.
Despite the grim statistics, Mrs Idoko expressed optimism about the potential of the recently developed malaria vaccine to revolutionize the fight against the disease in Nigeria. She emphasized the life-threatening nature of malaria and its ability to impede economic growth while disproportionately affecting vulnerable populations. As accessible healthcare providers, community pharmacists are positioned as crucial partners in malaria prevention, control, and treatment due to their expertise in medication management.
Mrs. Idoko emphasized the significance of the malaria vaccine, likening it to other certified vaccines that have proven effective in combating diseases. She believes that the malaria vaccine has the potential to significantly reduce mortality rates associated with the disease, thereby addressing a longstanding public health challenge in Nigeria.
