The Super Falcons of Nigeria have left an indelible mark on the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup, securing an impressive 10th-place finish in the overall tournament ranking. Their remarkable performance outshone football powerhouses like Germany, Brazil, Italy, Canada, Portugal, and Argentina, underscoring their prowess as a nine-time African champion.

Under the leadership of Randy Waldrum, the team achieved the distinction of being ranked as the 10th best in the competition. They held the distinction of being the highest-ranking team from the African continent, surpassing the efforts of Morocco, South Africa, and Zambia.

During the group stage, the Super Falcons showcased their resilience by remaining undefeated. While they clinched second place behind co-hosts Australia, their unblemished record marked a historic first. Notably, they held the Olympic champions, Canada, to a goalless draw in their opening match, followed by a stunning 3-2 victory against co-hosts Australia. They further solidified their advancement by securing a spot in the next round with a goalless draw against debutants, the Republic of Ireland.

However, their journey in the 2023 Women’s World Cup came to an end in the Round of 16. Despite putting up a valiant fight, the Super Falcons succumbed to the Lionesses of England, losing 4-2 on penalties.

FIFA's ranking methodology added a unique twist to the assessment. Teams that were eliminated at the same stage were ranked based on their respective exit scenarios. According to the ranking list provided by Fox Soccer, the Super Falcons secured an impressive 10th place in the overall standings.

The top 10 teams in the World Cup included Spain in the first position, followed by England, Sweden, and Australia. Rounding out the list of top-performing teams were Japan, France, the Netherlands, and Colombia. The USA held the ninth position, with the Super Falcons of Nigeria making a triumphant appearance in the 10th spot.

Meanwhile, Morocco secured the 12th ranking, reigning African champions South Africa claimed the 16th position, and Zambia settled at the 25th spot, showcasing the diverse representation of African teams in the global tournament.
