Labour Party's 2023 Presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has strongly condemned the proposed demolition of approximately 200 houses in the Nuwalege community of Abuja to make way for the expansion of the presidential fleet. In a statement released via his X account on Thursday, Obi expressed shock and distress over the planned demolitions, labeling the move as "inconsiderate" given the prevailing economic hardships faced by most Nigerians.

Expressing his dismay, Obi highlighted the insensitivity of embarking on such a project during a period of significant economic hardship in the country. He emphasized that a nation where over 100 million citizens are reportedly being pushed into poverty, as announced by the World Bank, should not be displacing hundreds of people to accommodate a luxury aircraft fleet for the presidency.

Obi argued that rather than expanding the presidential fleet, the government should be exploring ways to reduce or eliminate it in order to cut costs. He stressed the need to discontinue the encouragement of a luxurious lifestyle for those responsible for the nation's suffering, advocating for a shift in focus towards policies that would alleviate the plight of impoverished Nigerians.

The presidential candidate urged the government to reconsider the planned demolitions and redirect its attention to formulating policies that would alleviate the suffering of the less privileged in the country.
