EGBIN POWER PLANT SHUTDOWN CAUSES SIGNIFICANT DROP IN NIGERIA'S POWER SUPPLY

Yesterday, Nigeria's power supply experienced a significant drop to 3,636MW due to the shutdown of the Egbin Power Plant and challenges in the transmission network. The shutdown of Egbin, which is the country's largest power plant, resulted in a loss of 676MW at 10 a.m., causing the grid supply to decrease from 4,416MW to 3,632MW.

According to a statement released by the generation company on its verified X account (formerly Twitter), the shutdown was necessary to facilitate maintenance on the gas pipeline supplying the plant. The statement indicated that the Egbin Power generating station was shut down at 11:13 hours on December 18, 2023, to allow the Nigeria Gas Company to conduct maintenance on the gas pipeline feeding the power station.

The statement further explained that the shutdown would last for three days, leading to a reduction of 676MW of bulk power generated into the nation’s grid during this period. Consequently, there would be a decrease in the quantum of bulk power available for delivery to distribution companies' load centers nationwide for the duration of the shutdown.
