BREAKING NEWS: NLC AND TUC SUSPEND ONGOING STRIKE

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) have decided to suspend the ongoing strike following the intervention of the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu.

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) have decided to suspend the ongoing strike following the intervention of the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu. The decision to suspend the strike was made during a meeting of the National Executive Council of the NLC and TUC, which lasted close to an hour. The meeting involved various affiliates and state chapters reviewing the outcome of the discussions held between the labour leaders and Ribadu.

Tommy Etim, the National Deputy Vice-President of the TUC, confirmed the suspension of the strike in an interview, stating that it was based on their trust in the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, who had given them his word. The labour leaders had earlier met with Ribadu and the Minister of Labour, Simon Lalong, at the Office of the NSA, where it was announced that the individuals responsible for the alleged brutalization of NLC President Joe Ajaero had been arrested.

The organized labour had been protesting against the alleged brutalization of Joe Ajaero and the government's failure to effectively implement some of the agreements reached on October 2, 2023. However, following the assurances and intervention of the National Security Adviser, the decision was made to suspend the strike.

This development signifies a temporary halt to the strike action as a result of the trust placed in the National Security Adviser and the government's actions regarding the alleged brutalization of the NLC President. It remains to be seen how the situation will unfold in the coming days and whether the government will address the concerns raised by the organized labour to prevent a resumption of the strike.
