MARITIME WORKERS UNION OF NIGERIA JOINS NATIONWIDE STRIKE CALLED BY NLC AND TUC

The Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN) has aligned itself with the nationwide strike called by NLC and TUC, directing workers to close all port formations across the country.

The Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN) has issued a directive for workers to close all port formations across the country starting from Tuesday, in alignment with the nationwide strike initiated by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC).

The strike is a response to the assault on the NLC President, Joe Ajaero, and others in Owerri, Imo State, on November 1, as well as various unresolved labor issues in the state. In a statement by the Head of Media, John Ikemefuna, on behalf of the President-General, Prince Adewale Adeyanju, the union announced the commencement of the nationwide strike at midnight on Tuesday, November 14, 2023.

The decision to strike was made following the NLC's National Executive Council (NEC) meeting on Monday, November 13, 2023, where affiliates of the Congress were directed to strictly comply with the strike. The MWUN emphasized that the NLC and TUC arrived at this decision after a joint meeting in Abuja, prompted by a series of infractions and encroachments on workers' rights, as well as distressing incidents involving the abduction and assault on the NLC President and other union officials.

The union cited the government's continued refusal to implement agreements, non-payment of backlog of salaries, pensions, discriminatory payment of salaries, and non-compliance with the national minimum wage as additional reasons for the strike. As an affiliate of the NLC, the MWUN is prepared to commence the nationwide strike as directed by the NLC.
