Escalating Kidnappings: Insecurity Grips Nigeria's States

In recent times, Nigeria has been plagued by escalating insecurity, with bandits, terrorists, and herdsmen wreaking havoc across several states.

Bandits, terrorists, and herdsmen have unleashed havoc in several states of Nigeria, kidnapping children and individuals indiscriminately. In March 2024 alone, media reports indicate that over 1,087 Nigerians, including children, were kidnapped, although the actual number could be higher due to under-reporting. One recent incident involved the abduction of 30 children by suspected bandits in Kasai village, Batsari Local Government Area of Katsina State. These abductions occurred while the children were gathering firewood for cooking, highlighting the vulnerability of civilians to such attacks.

However, prompt action by the Katsina State Police Command led to the rescue of the abducted children, mainly girls. The Commissioner of Police deployed operatives to the scene, resulting in the safe recovery of the victims. Meanwhile, in Zamfara State, bandits attacked a man, killing him, and abducted his wife and a neighbor. This incident occurred alongside reports of bandits disrupting prayers in a mosque and kidnapping worshippers in Gusau town.

The Zamfara State Government has responded to the escalating kidnapping activities by ordering the immediate restriction of movement along the state's borders with Katsina and Sokoto states from 7:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. This measure aims to address the rampant kidnapping of travelers along major highways in the state.

In Taraba State, gunmen kidnapped two students of the Federal University, Wukari, causing confusion in the area. The victims, a male and a female student, were abducted from a restaurant near the school gate. Security operatives have launched a search and rescue operation to secure their release.

In Delta State, gunmen kidnapped two individuals and a baby along the Oviri-Ogor and Okapvuerhe Olomu road, demanding a ransom of N15 million. The victims, who sustained injuries during the attack, were rescued by the Olomu Vigilante group. This incident adds to the growing insecurity in the region, prompting calls for increased support and resources to address the worsening situation.
