Nigeria's New Three-in-One Identity Card to Launch by August

The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) is set to introduce a revolutionary three-in-one identity card that combines identity, financial, and social services, aiming to enhance the lives of Nigerian citizens.

The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has confirmed that Nigerians will begin using the proposed three-in-one identity card by August this year. The single multipurpose card will combine identity, financial, and social services, and will be available to citizens across the country.

According to a high-ranking member of the implementation team, the commission has been working tirelessly to meet its goals and is currently in the testing and deployment stage. While the initial plan was to launch the card in July, there have been some delays, but the team is still hopeful that it will be available between July and August.

The official explained that deploying a new technology requires a lot of work, including configuring the card, enabling outlets, and testing. The portal for accessing the service also needs to be deployed and made scalable. Additionally, integrations with banks need to be done to enable the card, and all these details are being worked on.

The NIMC had announced the launch of the new card in collaboration with the Central Bank of Nigeria and the Nigeria Inter-bank Settlement System on April 5, 2024. The identity solution is equipped with payment capability for all types of social and financial services, and includes a bank-enabled National ID card, a social intervention card, and an optional ECOWAS National Biometric Identity Card.
