Governor Nasir Idris of Kebbi State has taken decisive action following a recent boat mishap that resulted in the loss of eight lives.

Governor Nasir Idris of Kebbi State has announced the establishment of a task force to address the issue of water transportation safety in the state. This decision comes in the wake of a recent boat mishap that claimed the lives of eight individuals. Governor Idris made this statement during a condolence visit to the Emir of Yauri, Dr Muhammad Zayyanu-Abdullahi, in the Yauri Local Government Area.

The governor expressed his condolences to the families affected by the tragic incident and emphasized the need for immediate action to prevent such mishaps in the future. He stated that the task force would be responsible for enforcing safety rules and regulations on waterways, including the use of life jackets and preventing overloading of boats. Governor Idris also mentioned that the state government would collaborate with the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) to ensure the effective operation of the task force.

Governor Idris assured the public that the government would take all necessary measures to prevent the recurrence of boat mishaps and protect the lives and properties of the people. He emphasized the importance of using life jackets and warned that passengers who refuse to comply with this safety measure would not be allowed to board any boat. Additionally, the task force would prohibit boats from embarking on journeys during unfavorable weather conditions or at night.

In a gesture of support, the governor announced a donation of N1 million to each family of the victims, providing some financial relief during this difficult time. The Emir of Yauri, Dr Muhammad Zayyanu-Abdullahi, expressed his appreciation for the governor's visit and commended the decision to suspend mining activities in the state. He believed that this action would contribute to the security and protection of lives in the mining communities.

The Emir also urged social media users to verify information before sharing it, as there were misleading reports circulating about the number of passengers involved in the boat mishap. He clarified that there were 17 passengers on board, and eight bodies had been recovered so far, with rescue operations ongoing. The Emir's cautionary statement highlights the importance of responsible information sharing and the need for accurate reporting in such sensitive situations.
