President Bola Tinubu has appointed Dr. Abdu Mukhtar as the National Coordinator of the Presidential 'Unlocking Healthcare Value-Chain' Initiative. The initiative falls under the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare and aims to attract new investments into Nigeria's healthcare delivery system. The appointment was announced by Presidential spokesman, Ajuri Ngelale.

The strategic approval of Dr. Mukhtar's appointment is aimed at unlocking billions of dollars of investment in the healthcare sector. The initiative will involve a time-bound and cross-ministerial collaboration to restructure various aspects of the healthcare ecosystem, including health product manufacturing, logistics services, technology services, retail services, provider facilitation, and health payor reform. The goal is to increase domestic manufacturing of generic pharmaceuticals, vaccines, biologics, and devices, while reducing outbound medical tourism and creating quality jobs.

Dr. Mukhtar brings a wealth of experience to the role, having previously served as the Director of Industry and Trade Development at the African Development Bank (AfDB). Prior to that, he played a key role in the expansion of the Dangote Group of Industries, particularly in cement production and joint ventures in the power, oil & gas, and agriculture sectors. He also served as the Chief Executive Officer of the FCTA's Abuja Investment Company Limited.

Dr. Mukhtar holds a Doctorate in Biotechnology from Boston University, a Masters in Business Administration from Harvard Business School, a Masters in Public Policy from Harvard's Kennedy School of Government, and a Medical Degree from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria.

The President has high expectations for Dr. Mukhtar in his new role as the National Coordinator of the initiative. He is expected to utilize his experience and academic qualifications to effectively execute this national assignment and turn Nigeria's healthcare delivery system into a reality that aligns with the administration's Renewed Hope Agenda.
