Abia State Commissioner for Health Allegedly Suspended Over Mismanagement Allegations

Reports have emerged stating that the Commissioner for Health in Abia State, Dr. Ngozi Okoronkwo, has been suspended by Governor Alex Otti.

The Commissioner for Health in Abia State, Dr. Ngozi Okoronkwo, has reportedly faced suspension by Governor Alex Otti. Allegations of lack of accountability and financial mismanagement have been cited as the reasons behind her suspension.

According to social media reports, the suspension of the embattled Commissioner occurred indefinitely during a State Executive Council meeting held on Monday. A top government official, speaking to Vanguard, confirmed that the Governor indeed instructed the Health Commissioner to "step aside."

The source, who requested anonymity, stated that the Governor's action aimed to facilitate an investigation into the Commissioner and her Ministry regarding complaints of financial mismanagement and lack of transparency. The suspension was not perceived as a death sentence or indictment but rather as a measure to ensure accountability and transparency through an audit process.

The Governor's directive to "step aside" was explained as a means to address concerns raised against the Commissioner's conduct and the delivery of her mandate. The source emphasized the importance of subjecting government officials to public scrutiny and addressing grievances to uphold transparency and accountability.

Efforts to reach the embattled Commissioner for a response were unsuccessful, as she did not answer calls or respond to text messages.

This alleged suspension follows closely on the heels of the suspension of the Principal of the School of Nursing, Abiriba, for alleged high-handedness and lack of transparency. The Students Union Government had petitioned against the suspended Principal, prompting government intervention. Similarly, the former boss of the State Orientation Agency was reportedly suspended over alleged sharp practices.

Governor Otti had previously emphasized his zero tolerance for corruption during the swearing-in of Commissioners, warning of consequences for any misconduct among his aides.

It's notable that the Ministry of Health received 15% of the state's budget in the 2024 Appropriation Bill, marking a significant allocation compared to previous budgets in the history of Abia State.
