La Liga strugglers Sevilla have announced the appointment of former Uruguay national coach Diego Alonso as their new coach for the remainder of the season. The Spanish club, who are the reigning Europa League champions, currently sit in 14th place with only two wins from their first eight games.

Diego Alonso, 48 years old, becomes the fourth coach to take charge of the cash-strapped club in the past 12 months. Prior to his appointment at Sevilla, Alonso led Uruguay to the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. However, the team failed to progress beyond the qualifying round, leading to his replacement by Marcelo Bielsa.

Alonso's most notable successes as a coach came during his time with Mexican clubs Pachuca and Monterrey. He guided both teams to victory in the regional Champions League, with Pachuca winning in 2017 and Monterrey in 2019. As a player, Alonso had stints at various Spanish clubs including Espanol, Valencia, Atletico Madrid, Racing Santander, and Real Murcia.

Sevilla's decision to appoint Alonso comes after the sacking of coach Jose Luis Mendilibar on Sunday. Despite leading the team to a record-extending seventh Europa League trophy in May and helping them avoid relegation last season, Mendilibar was dismissed due to a poor start to the current campaign.

Under Mendilibar's guidance, Sevilla achieved impressive victories against Manchester United and Juventus on their way to the Europa League final, where they emerged victorious in a penalty shootout against Jose Mourinho's Roma. The club will now look to Alonso to turn their fortunes around and improve their league position in La Liga.
