Legal Perspectives on Rivers State Political Crisis: Falana's Assertion and Presidential Neutrality

In the midst of the political turbulence in Rivers State, two key figures have emerged: human rights lawyer Femi Falana, SAN, and the Presidency represented by Special Adviser Ajuri Ngelale.

Human rights lawyer Femi Falana, SAN, asserted that Governor Siminalayi Fubara lacks the authority to relocate the sitting venue of the Rivers State House of Assembly. Falana made these remarks during an interview on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics, emphasizing the independence of the legislature from the executive arm of the government. He clarified that the governor cannot dictate where the assembly convenes, stating that the house operates autonomously.

Falana speculated that the governor's executive order may have been issued prior to the intervention of the High Court in Rivers State. He reiterated that the legislature maintains its independence and cannot be directed by the executive.

Meanwhile, the Presidency, through Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to President Bola Tinubu, Ajuri Ngelale, affirmed that President Tinubu would not take sides in the ongoing political crisis between Minister of Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Nyesom Wike, and Governor Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers State. Ngelale stressed that anyone expecting President Tinubu to intervene in the crisis would be disappointed, emphasizing the President's commitment to ensuring the smooth functioning of the Rivers State Government for the benefit of its people.

Ngelale emphasized that President Tinubu's focus is on providing support to all stakeholders to facilitate effective governance. He reiterated that President Tinubu would not allow any actions aimed at hindering the operations of the Rivers State Government from benefiting its citizens. Therefore, stakeholders should not anticipate the President taking sides in the matter, but rather ensuring fairness and functionality in government affairs.
