Umahi Ready to Face Probe: Defending Transparency in the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway Project

In the midst of controversy surrounding the N15 trillion Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway project, Senator David Umahi, the Minister of Works, stands firm in his readiness to confront a probe by the House of Representatives.

Senator David Umahi, the Minister of Works, has expressed his readiness to face a probe by the House of Representatives regarding the N15tn Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway road project. He emphasized his willingness to ensure the proceedings are televised live for transparency. Umahi asserted that the project followed due process, with necessary approvals and documentation obtained. Despite refraining from commenting further until meeting with the legislators, he affirmed his readiness to defend the project publicly.

The House of Representatives resolved to investigate the project following a motion moved during plenary, aiming to set up an ad-hoc committee to submit a report within four weeks. This decision came amid concerns raised about the project's transparency and adherence to due process. The House plans to summon key officials, including the Minister of Works, to shed more light on the matter.

Umahi and the Ministry of Works defended the project, refuting claims of irregularities and asserting that due process was followed. They highlighted the support pledged by House members and emphasized the project's potential economic benefits.

The coastal highway project, spanning 700 kilometers, has been subject to commendation and criticism since its approval. It aims to connect Lagos to Cross River, with significant infrastructure development planned along the route. Umahi clarified that the project's initiation was aimed at stimulating economic activity and addressing infrastructure needs, dismissing allegations of personal interest.

Umahi further addressed concerns regarding project costs and compensation, providing explanations and directing inquiries to relevant authorities. His Special Adviser on Media affirmed the administration's transparency and commitment to proper procedures, welcoming the probe as an opportunity to ensure accountability and inclusiveness in the developmental process.

In conclusion, Umahi and his team remain steadfast in their defense of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway project, expressing confidence in its legitimacy and potential to drive economic growth. They view the House of Representatives' probe as a constructive step towards ensuring transparency and accountability in government projects.
