Trade Union Congress Urges Action on Food Importation Amidst IMF, World Bank Criticism"

The Trade Union Congress has taken a proactive stance on addressing the challenges facing Nigeria, urging President Bola Tinubu to expedite the importation of food items to alleviate hardship.

The Trade Union Congress (TUC) has urgently called on President Bola Tinubu to facilitate the importation of food items from any part of the world within a two-week timeframe to alleviate the prevailing hardship in the country. Additionally, TUC has accused the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank of contributing to the high cost of living in Nigeria by advocating for the removal of subsidies on petroleum products and electricity tariffs. The Congress urged the government to resist adhering to the directives of these global institutions.

Despite these pressing concerns, TUC has clarified that it will not be part of the proposed nationwide protest organized by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC). TUC emphasized its stance of not participating in any process to which it was not initially a party.

During a press briefing in Abuja on Monday, TUC President, Comrade Festus Osofo, addressed these issues and outlined the Congress's recommendations and solutions, which are set to be presented to the federal government through the office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation. Notably, the briefing did not mention the proposed protest by the NLC.

Responding to questions from journalists about TUC's involvement in the protest, Comrade Osifo reiterated that TUC was not part of it. He emphasized the importance of joint agreement in decision-making processes and questioned the absence of such agreement regarding the protest. Osifo highlighted TUC's commitment to transparent and consensus-driven actions, noting the absence of TUC representatives at the NLC's protest.
