NDLEA ARRESTS SPAIN-BASED BUSINESSMAN FOR DRUG TRAFFICKING AT ABUJA AIRPORT

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has made significant strides in combating drug trafficking with the recent arrest of Sherif Egbo, a Spain-based businessman, at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport (NAIA) in Abuja.

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has reported the arrest of Sherif Egbo, a 40-year-old businessman based in Spain, for drug trafficking. The arrest took place at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport (NAIA) in Abuja, as Egbo was attempting to board an Air France flight to Paris. NDLEA's Director of Media and Advocacy, Mr Femi Babafemi, revealed that the suspect had ingested illicit drugs, which were discovered through a body scanner.

On Saturday, October 14, Egbo was apprehended after the body scanner revealed wraps of illicit drugs in his stomach. He was then placed under observation in the agency's exhibit recovery room, where he excreted 93 pellets of heroin weighing 2.222 kilograms. According to Babafemi, the suspect claimed to work at a chicken hatchery farm in Madrid, Spain, while also being involved in drug trafficking.

In addition to Egbo's arrest, NDLEA operatives at the Nigeria Aviation Handling Company (NAHCO) imports shed of the Murtala Mohammed International Airport (MMIA) in Ikeja, Lagos, made other significant seizures. They confiscated a consignment of 10 cartons containing 500,000 pills of tramadol 225mg, which were falsely branded as tapentadol. The cargo had been shipped from India through Qatar Airways, with an airwaybill numbered MAWB 319-01227236, and was purported to be a transit cargo to Monrovia, Liberia. However, the collaboration and real-time intelligence sharing between NDLEA and its Liberian counterpart exposed the deception.

Furthermore, NDLEA operatives thwarted an attempt by an individual named Ngene Chinecherem, who was planning to travel to Muscat, Oman on Qatar Airways, to export 11.100kg of skunk and 600 grams of tramadol. The drugs were concealed within foodstuffs and intended to be exported through the Lagos airport. The suspect was arrested, and the illicit substances were seized.
