University of Lagos Student Named 2024 Knight-Hennessy Scholar at Stanford University

David Akanmu, the top-performing graduate of the University of Lagos in 2024, has garnered prestigious recognition as a 2024 Knight-Hennessy Scholar at Stanford University.

David Akanmu, the 2024 best-graduating student of the University of Lagos, has been honored as a 2024 Knight-Hennessy Scholar, according to an announcement made by the Knight-Hennessy Scholars at Stanford University. Akanmu's selection is a significant achievement, as he is among five Africans chosen for the 2024 cohort, and notably the sole representative from an African-based tertiary institution. This cohort marks the seventh and largest since the establishment of the award.

The statement further revealed that the University of Lagos (UNILAG) stands as the only African university among the 60 institutions contributing to the selection of the 2024 cohort of 90 new scholars. The Knight-Hennessy Scholars program is described as a multidisciplinary, multicultural graduate fellowship program encompassing all seven schools at Stanford University. Scholars in this program receive financial support for up to three years to pursue graduate studies at Stanford, while also engaging in experiences aimed at fostering visionary, courageous, and collaborative leadership to address global challenges.

Candidates for the Knight-Hennessy Scholars program are chosen based on their demonstration of independent thought, purposeful leadership, and a civic mindset. John L. Hennessy, the Shriram Family Director of Knight-Hennessy Scholars and Stanford University president emeritus, expressed optimism about the future, emphasizing the increasing complexity of global challenges and the importance of the program's mission.

UNILAG, in a post on its official handle, highlighted Akanmu's achievement as the third graduate of the institution to receive the Knight-Hennessy Scholar Award. Akanmu, who graduated with a perfect Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 5.0 in Civil Engineering during the UNILAG Convocation Ceremonies in January 2024, will pursue a Ph.D. in Energy Science and Engineering at the Stanford Doerr School of Sustainability.

The Vice-Chancellor of UNILAG, Prof Folasade Ogunsola, conveyed congratulations to Akanmu on behalf of the University Senate and community for his remarkable accomplishment.
