Indian police have made a significant breakthrough in the investigation of a four-year-old murder case involving the killing of a 35-year-old Nigerian man in Nalasopara, Mumbai. According to the Times of India, one of the suspects, identified as Kancha, has been apprehended by the police. The accused, who is 28 years old, was found living in the same town under a false identity. This information was confirmed by a crime branch official on Tuesday, October 17, 2023.

With the arrest of Kancha, also known as Roshan Bechain Mandal and Ashfaq Mohammad Sheikh, the number of individuals in custody in connection with the crime has risen to two. However, two other suspects involved in the murder remain at large.

The tragic incident took place on October 16, 2019, when the body of Joseph, also known as Chindiniju Amechi Wilson, was discovered on a road in the Pragati Nagar area of Nalasopara. The murder sent shockwaves through the Nigerian community residing in the locality, leading to outrage, damage to parked vehicles, and demands for the apprehension of the perpetrators.

During the course of their investigation, the police identified four men believed to be involved in the crime. One of them, Nasir Khan, was arrested, and a charge sheet was filed against him in court, as confirmed by an official from the Vasai crime branch (unit II).

Following a tip-off, the police received information that the accused, Kancha, had relocated to Bengaluru six months after the murder and had assumed a new identity. He was found residing in Nalasopara under the name Ashfaq Sheikh, with altered physical features.

In a significant development, the police authorities have determined that the murder was linked to a drug deal. This revelation sheds light on the motive behind the crime and provides crucial information for the ongoing investigation.

The arrest of Kancha brings hope for justice in this long-pending case, and the police will continue their efforts to apprehend the remaining suspects and ensure that all those involved in the murder are held accountable for their actions.
