Demolition of Landmark Beach Spurs Compensation and Impacts Beach Businesses

The demolition of a section of Landmark Beach in Victoria Island, Lagos, to make way for the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway has stirred controversy and prompted compensation efforts by the Federal Government.

On Monday, a section of Landmark Beach, located on Victoria Island, Lagos, was demolished to facilitate the construction of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway. Minister of Works, Dave Umahi, has consistently defended the demolition, citing the need to clear the landmark centre situated on the Federal Government's Right-of-Way.
Compensation payments to property owners affected by the demolition began on Wednesday, marking the Federal Government's response to the displacement caused by the project. Amidst this development, several beach businesses in the area also bore the brunt of the demolition exercise.
Among the affected establishments is Mami Chula Beach, which had its grand opening in February 2024 within the Oniru Beach vicinity. Offering a luxurious beach experience, it boasts a gourmet restaurant, a stylish rooftop lounge, and direct beach access.
Breeze Beach Club, another casualty of the demolition, is a popular leisure destination nestled on Victoria Island. Known for its diverse amenities and family-friendly ambience, it attracts visitors seeking a tranquil retreat by the sea.
Moist Beach Club, situated in a secluded spot on Victoria Island, is a private oasis frequented by locals and tourists alike. With a range of facilities including a restaurant, bar/lounge, pool, and nightclub, it offers various recreational activities such as sunbathing, beach yoga, and horseback riding.
G12 Oniru Beach, a renowned coastal destination in the Oniru area of Lagos, provides visitors with picturesque views and recreational opportunities. Its serene atmosphere appeals to those looking to unwind and enjoy the coastline.
Lastly, Xchange Lagos Beach Club, located at Oniru Private Beach, offers a comprehensive array of amenities catering to diverse preferences. From water sports and seaside lounges to beachfront apartments and vibrant nightlife, it attracts celebrities and leisure seekers alike, making it a premier destination for relaxation and entertainment.
