The Anambra State Police Command has initiated a search for unidentified attackers who allegedly crossed over from a neighboring state to fatally shoot two police officers. The incident occurred at Uga Roundabout in Aguata Local Government Area of Anambra State late on Thursday.

According to an eyewitness, the assailants, armed with AK-47 rifles, arrived from the Umuchu-Umunze Road and began abducting individuals at random. They engaged in a prolonged exchange of gunfire and subsequently killed two police officers upon sighting them approaching from the Ezinifite axis.

The Anambra State police spokesperson, DSP Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed the incident in a press statement on Friday. He stated that the police command had launched an extensive manhunt for the armed assailants who had infiltrated from a neighboring state and carried out the attack at approximately 6:30 pm on December 28, 2023.

Ikenga explained that the assailants, disguised in military attire and appearing to be on a kidnapping mission, initiated gunfire upon encountering two armed police officers who were advancing ahead of the convoy they were escorting to alleviate traffic congestion. The police retaliated, ensuring the safety of motorists in the vicinity and prompting the assailants to flee.

The police-led mobile Forward Operating Base, which had been patrolling the area throughout the Christmas period, swiftly responded to the scene. The authorities recovered a Lexus SUV used by the assailants and neutralized an improvised explosive device found in the vehicle.

The Commissioner of Police, CP Aderemi Adeoye, expressed condolences to the families of the deceased officers and the Enugu State Police Command. He assured that the fallen officers would not have died in vain and commended the personnel for their unwavering dedication to safeguarding the people of Anambra State. He urged them to draw inspiration from their colleagues' bravery and to remain undeterred by the tragic loss.
