Chief Ayo Adebanjo, the leader of the Pan-Yoruba socio-political organization, Afenifere, recently shared his assessment of Nigeria's state 63 years after independence. He emphasized the need for a change in the constitution, stating that it is crucial for a better Nigeria and for the country to move forward.

At 95 years old, Chief Adebanjo has witnessed the performance of successive governments and was asked whether he believes leaders have done well or if most have failed. He responded by criticizing the military for giving Nigeria a constitution that does not reflect the wishes of the people. He emphasized the importance of leaving behind that constitution and implementing a fair one that allows for equal representation and a fair share for all.

When asked about the decrease in agitations for restructuring since the rise of Bola Tinubu to power, Chief Adebanjo stated that the agitations have not gone down. He believes it is up to Tinubu to act and implement restructuring, which was one of the promises he made during his election campaign. Chief Adebanjo emphasized that a fair constitution is necessary for the peaceful coexistence of all regions.

While some argue that focusing on national development is more important than regional independence, Chief Adebanjo disagrees. He explained that he is one of the people who fought for independence and understands the deep divisions within the country. He believes that restructuring is the way to go and that the post-1960 generation does not fully grasp the challenges faced during the country's formation. He also expressed skepticism that the current ruling party, the APC, would implement restructuring due to a lack of honesty.

Chief Adebanjo highlighted the contrast between the governance of leaders like Chief Obafemi Awolowo and Ahmadu Bello and the current state of affairs. He blamed the lack of proper leadership in recent years, stating that many leaders prioritize their own interests over the well-being of the nation and its citizens. He cited examples such as the removal of petrol subsidy and the mismanagement of resources, which have led to suffering among the people while government officials allocate more money to themselves.

Regarding the bitter politics practiced in this generation, Chief Adebanjo pointed out the violence within political parties and the exclusion of major stakeholders during elections. He stressed the need to change the constitution to reflect the wishes of the people and move the country forward.

When asked about Chief Obafemi Awolowo's vision for Nigeria compared to the current situation, Chief Adebanjo emphasized that Awolowo envisioned a country of freedom, enlightenment, and progress. He lamented that the current state of affairs is the opposite of progress.

Chief Adebanjo believes that today's leaders can learn from Awolowo's leadership style and character by reading his books and adhering to his principles. He criticized the notion that education cannot be free in today's world, stating that it is possible through prudent management of resources.

Regarding his relationship with Bola Tinubu, Chief Adebanjo clarified that there is no quarrel between them. He expressed his desire for Tinubu to implement restructuring, which was one of the reasons he supported him in the past.

Chief Adebanjo stressed the importance of addressing mutual distrust between ethnic groups for the overall development of the country. He believes that sitting down to draw a new constitution based on principles of equity, fairness, and inclusiveness is necessary to address these issues. He also mentioned his support for Peter Obi as a unifying figure and emphasized the need for federalism where every section of the country is equal.

When asked about the clamor for a Yoruba nation, Chief Adebanjo stated that he believes the country is better together but on the condition of equity, fairness, and inclusiveness. He expressed his opposition to one tribe dominating others and emphasized the need for federalism to ensure fairness.

Regarding the killings in the South-East and the demand for a Biafra nation, Chief Adebanjo attributed these issues to the injustice in the present constitution that allows one side to dominate the other. He argued that if equity is not provided in a federation, then each ethnic nationality should be allowed to go back to their pre-colonial state.

Chief Adebanjo criticized former President Muhammadu Buhari for not taking any action on restructuring or considering the recommendations of Goodluck Jonathan's conference. He expressed his hope that Bola Tinubu would leave a legacy of restructuring for the country if he has the courage to do so. He believes that restructuring will resolve agitations and bring peace to the nation.
