The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) has taken action against an Abuja-based Chinese supermarket affiliated with the China General Chamber of Commerce in Abuja following accusations of discriminatory practices against Nigerians. The FCCPC officials visited the premises on Monday and sealed the supermarket after questioning Nigerian employees.

Workers at the store revealed that the owner, a Chinese woman named Cindy Liu Bei, had fled the premises with her family at 8:26 am on Monday, as captured on Closed-Circuit Television cameras. Subsequently, the FCCPC officials shut down the supermarket.

The supermarket had attracted attention due to a controversial policy that restricted entry exclusively to Chinese nationals, barring Nigerians from patronizing the establishment. This policy sparked widespread condemnation on social media platforms, with Nigerians expressing outrage over the discriminatory treatment.

During the enforcement exercise, led by Director for Surveillance and Investigation, Boladale Adeyinka, the FCCPC officials aimed to verify the allegations from a viral video depicting Nigerians allegedly being discriminated against and denied access to the supermarket.

Adeyinka confirmed the owner's departure and directed that she appear before the commission tribunal by Wednesday. If she fails to comply with the summons, the FCCPC has the authority to seal the premises until she appears.

The FCCPC officials subsequently sealed the supermarket, signaling the commission's commitment to addressing allegations of discriminatory practices and ensuring compliance with consumer protection regulations.
