Deadly Attacks Rock Bokkos Communities in Plateau State

The Bokkos local government area of Plateau State witnessed a tragic incident on Friday night, as two communities, Mandung-Mushu and Kopnanle, fell victim to violent attacks resulting in the loss of at least 10 lives.

Two communities in the Bokkos local government area of Plateau State, Mandung-Mushu and Kopnanle, were subjected to attacks on Friday night, resulting in the loss of at least 10 lives. The State Police Command and Operation Safe Haven (OpSH), responsible for maintaining peace in the state, had not yet issued a response to the incident. However, Barr. Farmasum Fuddang, Chairman of Bokkos Cultural Development Council (BCDC) Vanguard, confirmed the attack. State Governor Caleb Mutfwang condemned the violence and urged security personnel to apprehend the perpetrators.

In a statement issued in Jos on Saturday, Fuddang described the attacks as horrific, stating that armed terrorists, numbering more than 50, descended upon the villages under the cover of darkness. The assailants targeted innocent civilians as they slept, setting fire to homes and a place of worship. Despite the presence of security forces, including the DSS, Army, and Police, the attackers were not effectively intercepted.

The attacks, which predominantly targeted children, appeared to be part of a broader agenda to instill fear and displace communities. Fuddang also highlighted a leaked memo falsely accusing their community of planning violence against Fulani residents, which they vehemently denied. Despite efforts to address these falsehoods, security forces failed to protect the community.

Governor Mutfwang, in a statement by his Director of Press and Public Affairs, Gyang Bere, strongly condemned the renewed attacks. He emphasized the government's commitment to restoring peace and security and facilitating the return of displaced persons to their homes. Mutfwang warned the perpetrators to cease their actions as the government is determined to bring them to justice. He extended condolences to the bereaved families and affected communities and prayed for the quick recovery of those injured. Additionally, he urged security agencies to intensify their efforts in protecting innocent communities.
