Oyo State Secretariat in Ibadan Attacked by Suspected O’odua Nation Agitators: Chaos and Confrontation Ensue

The Oyo State Secretariat in Ibadan was the scene of a tense confrontation on Saturday, as suspected O’odua Nation agitators launched an attack, prompting a swift response from security forces.

The Oyo State Secretariat in Ibadan faced an attack by suspected O’odua Nation agitators on Saturday, resulting in chaos and confrontation with security forces. The agitators, dressed in military camouflage and armed with weapons, sought to assert their presence by hoisting their own flag within the State Assembly premises.

Security personnel at the secretariat quickly called for backup as they grappled with the challenge of containing the agitators. A response team comprising the Nigeria Police Force, Nigerian Army, Amotekun Corps, Department of State Services (DSS), and Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) converged on the scene to restore order and confront the intruders.

Eyewitnesses observed the arrival of the agitators in an ash-colored Hiace bus and two motorcycles, which were later seized and taken to the State Police Headquarters. The gunmen targeted the State House of Assembly premises, replacing the Nigerian national flag with their own O’odua Nation flag before security forces intervened.

Amidst sporadic gunfire, security forces apprehended several of the agitators while others managed to evade capture, fleeing into nearby bushes and forests. Reports suggest that a total of 16 suspects have been arrested, with two sustaining bullet wounds, and some escaping with gunshot injuries.

Fatai Owoseni, the Special Adviser to Governor Seyi Makinde on Security, assured the public that the situation was under control, describing the gunmen as "miscreants" and urging calm. Security personnel maintained a presence at the secretariat gate to ensure the safety of the area.

Adewale Osifeso, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) in the state, confirmed the incident but indicated that he was still gathering details about the situation. With the confrontation resolved, investigations into the incident are ongoing.
