Rising Cult Violence in Awka: Calls for Surveillance Amidst Escalating Tensions

The city of Awka, located in Anambra State, Nigeria, has been plagued by a recent surge in violent clashes attributed to rival cult groups.

In Awka, Anambra State, a yet-to-be-identified individual was fatally shot near UNIZIK Junction by suspected members of a rival cult group. The victim, traveling in a yellow tricycle, was ambushed and gunned down in what appears to be another incident linked to ongoing supremacy battles among cult factions. The city has witnessed a surge in violent clashes, with over 12 reported killings since Easter Sunday, all attributed to these rivalries.

According to an eyewitness who preferred anonymity for safety reasons, the victim, identified as a manager at Anambra Executive Transport Company, was shot three times before the assailants fled the scene in their tricycle. Despite the prevalence of such incidents, the state police spokesperson, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, claimed ignorance of the latest killing, highlighting the reluctance of many families to report cult-related crimes to the authorities, opting instead to bury their loved ones privately.

In response to the escalating violence, residents have begun advocating for the installation of CCTV cameras in key areas of Awka to enhance surveillance and deter criminal activities. The atmosphere of fear and insecurity has led to increased vigilance, with many streets barricading their gates and implementing restrictions on tricycle access to mitigate the risk of further violence.
