Nigerian Navy Investigates Death of Civilian Staff Member: Allegations of Assault Surface

The Nigerian Navy has launched an investigation into the tragic death of Richard Onumaegbu, a civilian staff member of the Ministry of Defence.

The Nigerian Navy has launched an investigation into the death of Richard Onumaegbu, a civilian staff member of the Ministry of Defence assigned to the Laboratory Department of the Nigerian Navy Reference Hospital in Ojo, Lagos State. Commodore A. A. Adams-Aliu, representing the Chief of the Naval Staff, issued a statement on Thursday disclosing the initiation of an inquiry into the circumstances surrounding Onumaegbu's death.

According to the statement, Onumaegbu was involved in a confrontation with a civilian woman and some Navy personnel at the Navy Town barracks. Four days later, he was found dead in his office at the NNRH. The Nigerian Navy expressed deep sadness over Onumaegbu's passing, emphasizing his integral role within the NN family and his dedicated service since 2009.

A preliminary investigation revealed that Onumaegbu had engaged in a confrontation with the civilian woman and some Navy personnel on March 26, 2024, at Navy Town barracks. As a result, all suspected personnel and the civilian woman involved in the altercation were identified and are currently under close custody.

The Nigerian Navy has transferred Onumaegbu's body to a government facility for autopsy, as requested by his family. Additionally, the NN assured Onumaegbu's family and the public that all necessary measures are being taken to uncover the cause of his death, and any individual found responsible will be prosecuted according to the law.

Meanwhile, a TikTok user claiming to be a member of Onumaegbu's family posted a video earlier in the week, narrating the circumstances surrounding his death. The family source alleged that Onumaegbu was killed by four Naval officers contracted by a civilian woman with whom he had a confrontation. According to the source, the altercation resulted in Onumaegbu being severely beaten for seven hours on March 26-27, 2024, ultimately leading to his death.

The video highlighted Onumaegbu's dedication to his job despite his injuries, as he still went to work on Easter Sunday and passed away there. The family source called for justice, alleging that Onumaegbu died as a result of the severe beating inflicted by the naval officers contracted by the civilian woman.
