Minority House Leaders Disavow Call for PDP Chairman's Resignation

The minority leaders of the House of Representatives, representing various opposition parties, have distanced themselves from the recent call for the resignation of the Peoples Democratic Party’s acting National Chairman, Umar Damagum.

The minority leaders of the House of Representatives, representing various opposition parties, have disavowed the actions of 60 lawmakers who recently called for the resignation of the Peoples Democratic Party’s acting National Chairman, Umar Damagum, over alleged anti-party activities. These lawmakers, under the Coalition of Opposition Lawmakers, had threatened to leave the PDP if Damagum did not step down to make way for a new acting chairman from the North Central, the region of the suspended National Chairman, Senator Iyorchia Ayu.

In response to this, the minority leaders issued a statement on Tuesday, signed by figures such as Minority Leader Kingsley Chinda, Deputy Minority Leader Ali Madaki, Minority Whip Ali Isah, and Deputy Minority Whip George Ozodinobi. They disassociated themselves from the coalition led by Ikenga Ugochinyere, labeling it as an entity unknown to the parliament.

The statement emphasized that neither the minority caucus nor the PDP caucus endorsed the actions of the group calling for Damagum's resignation. They condemned the coalition's approach, criticizing its language and characterizing its demands as absurd and unparliamentary.

The minority leaders clarified that the coalition did not represent the views of the minority parties within the parliament. They urged the public to recognize that the coalition's demands were not reflective of the consensus within the parliamentary circles.

Furthermore, it was noted that the absence of Kingsley Chinda, a key figure aligned with the Federal Capital Territory Minister, Nyesom Wike, during Monday's briefing, indicated ongoing tensions within the party. This absence hinted at a deeper rift within the party, particularly concerning the struggle for control in Rivers State between Wike and Governor Siminalaiye Fubara.
