The Committee of Vice-Chancellors has submitted a report to the Minister of Education, Prof. Tahir Mamman, outlining the challenges faced by universities in Nigeria. The report, presented by the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Benin, Prof. Lilian Salami, highlighted issues such as funding, staff recruitment, university autonomy, and conflicts between university laws and other regulations. The presentation took place during a meeting at the Federal Ministry of Education Secretariat in Abuja, attended by the Minister of State for Education, Dr. Yusuf Sununu, and the Permanent Secretary, David Adejo.

Prof. Salami expressed gratitude for the opportunity to discuss these critical challenges and presented the committee's study report on sustainable models for Nigerian federal universities. She also extended an invitation to the minister and his team to the committee's diamond jubilee celebration scheduled to take place in Abuja from October 9 to 11, 2023.

In response, the minister assured the delegation that the President, who serves as the visitor to all federal universities, is committed to transforming the nation. He emphasized the President's business-like approach to governance and the implementation of quarterly performance reviews for ministers. The minister pledged to address fundamental structural issues in the education sector, from primary to tertiary education, and collaborate with all stakeholders to bring about positive changes.

The minister further emphasized the importance of aligning educational outcomes with national productivity, research innovation, and entrepreneurship. This approach aims to promote self-reliance among graduates and reduce dependence on white-collar jobs. Additionally, the Minister of State for Education, Dr. Sununu, highlighted the security concerns in Nigerian universities, specifically referring to the recent kidnapping of students at the Federal University, Gusau, in Zamfara State. He acknowledged the seriousness of the issue and affirmed the government's commitment to addressing it adequately.
