Stakeholders Meet to Address Labour Party's Leadership Crisis: Reinstatement of Julius Abure at Stake

Stakeholders of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) are poised to convene today to tackle the ongoing leadership crisis within the Labour Party, with a focus on the possible reinstatement of Julius Abure as the party’s National Chairman.

Stakeholders of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) are set to convene today to address the ongoing leadership crisis within the Labour Party and discuss the potential reinstatement of Julius Abure as the party’s National Chairman. It has been reported that unionists are proposing the establishment of a caretaker committee to assume control of the opposition party.

Invitations have been extended to all relevant stakeholders and members of the NLC Political Commission for the meeting scheduled to take place in Abuja. The outcome of this gathering may determine the fate of Abure, as preparations are underway to establish a caretaker committee to assume leadership of the party.

This development follows a recent unsuccessful attempt by the party’s Board of Trustees to wrest power from Abure and assume control of the Labour Party. In response to Abure's leadership, a group of retired workers, represented by the Lagos Assembly of Labour Veterans and Trade Unionists, staged a protest demanding his immediate resignation.

Additionally, retirees have called for the resignation of NLC President, Joe Ajaero, citing his failure to protect their interests and his handling of the party's leadership struggle. Efforts to obtain a response from NLC spokesman, Benson Upah, have been unsuccessful, as he has neither answered calls nor responded to messages seeking clarification.

Shortly after the NLC's invitation circulated, the Labour Party's leadership condemned the proposed meeting, labeling it as an illegal gathering orchestrated by "drama boys" within the NLC. In a statement issued by the National Publicity Secretary, Obiora Ifoh, the party urged law enforcement agencies to intervene and prevent the gathering from taking place, warning of potential public nuisance.

Ifoh emphasized that the Labour Party had not authorized the meeting and deemed its outcome invalid, asserting that the NLC lacks proprietary rights over the party and cannot claim ownership. The party criticized the NLC for prioritizing an unlawful meeting over addressing significant issues such as the recent electricity tariff hike by the Federal Government.
