Urgent Call for Investment in Nigeria's Education and Security: A Report on Insecurity and Education Challenges

The urgent need for substantial investment in Nigeria's education sector and security framework has been underscored by the International Organisation for Peace Building and Social Justice.

The International Organisation for Peace Building and Social Justice has emphasized the urgent need for significant investment in Nigeria's education sector and security framework amidst ongoing challenges in these areas. Highlighting the detrimental impact of insecurity on education, the organization pointed out Nigeria's alarming rate of out-of-school children, which accounts for 15 percent of the global total.

In its report titled 'Insecurity and Education in Nigeria: The Context and Challenges,' the group, represented by PSJ-UK CEO Ayo Adedoyin and IA Foundation Founder/CEO Ibironke Adeagbo, underscored the severe toll insecurity exacts on students, teachers, and families. This is particularly evident in the recurring attacks on schools, with incidents such as the abduction of 137 schoolchildren and a teacher in Kaduna State and 15 students in Sokoto State.

The report also highlighted the nationwide trend of school closures due to security threats, exacerbating the already significant number of out-of-school children, especially in the Northeast where the figure stands at 1.6 million. The intertwined crises of insecurity and education pose dire consequences for Nigeria's development, potentially leaving an entire generation with limited skills and global competitiveness.

Despite efforts by both national and international stakeholders, progress in addressing these challenges has been limited. Responses like military operations, peace negotiations, and education policy reforms have not yielded sustainable solutions, necessitating urgent action to tackle the root causes of insecurity and education crises.

The report recommended a comprehensive approach involving national and international actors, including strengthening security measures, promoting inclusive governance, investing in education infrastructure, and enhancing access to quality education for all. By addressing these challenges, Nigeria can pave the way for a more stable and prosperous future.
