Government Initiates Crackdown on Fake University Certificates

The Minister of Education, Prof. Tahir Mamman, has declared the government's determination to combat the proliferation of fake university certificates in the nation.

The Minister of Education, Prof. Tahir Mamman, announced on Tuesday the government's intention to pursue individuals holding fake university certificates in the country. He stated that security agencies would track down these individuals following the submission of a report by the committee established by the Federal Government to investigate university certificate fraud.

The Federal Government initiated an Inter-Ministerial Investigative Committee on Degree Certificate Milling in response to an investigative report by Daily Nigerian. This report exposed the activities of degree mills in Benin Republic, where the reporter, Umar Audu, detailed obtaining a degree within six weeks and completing the mandatory National Youth Service Corps scheme in Nigeria.

The expose led to a ban on the accreditation and evaluation of degrees from Benin Republic and Togo. Additionally, the committee was tasked with probing Nigerian private universities established in the last 15 years, which numbered over 107.

The committee recently solicited public input and conducted visits to institutions in Benin Republic. During the first quarterly citizens engagement in Abuja, Minister Mamman reiterated the government's commitment to addressing fake degrees. He assured that once the committee submits its report, individuals with fake certificates would be apprehended and tracked by security agencies.

Minister of State for Education, Dr. Tanko Sununu, emphasized the purpose of the quarterly citizenship engagement to raise awareness of the ministry's activities, foster understanding with stakeholders and citizens, enhance transparency and accountability, and identify and resolve operational challenges.
