Football fans across the nation are anxiously awaiting the outcome of the Confederation of African Football's decision regarding the botched 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying Group D match between Nigeria and Libya.
The Nigeria Football Federation lodged a complaint with CAF after the Super Eagles experienced inhumane treatment upon arriving in Libya for the second leg of the match against the Mediterranean Knights. A video shared by the Eagles media team revealed the players and officials stranded with their luggage at the airport, unassisted by indifferent Libyan airport officials who conversed in Arabic.
Originally scheduled to play at the 10,000-capacity Martyrs of Benina Stadium, the plane carrying the Nigerian team was diverted to Al Abraq Airport, over 200 km away from their planned campsite. This airport, typically used for hajj operations, lacked basic amenities and left the players and officials exhausted and frustrated. The Libyan Football Federation provided neither a receptive team nor transportation for the Nigerian team.
Detained at the airport for over 20 hours without food or water, the Nigerian squad was ultimately forced to boycott the game. In response, the Libyan Federation accused Nigeria of not cooperating with them during both legs of the match and compared their treatment in Nigeria to their own experience.
CAF President Patrice Motsepe mentioned during a press conference after the 46th Ordinary General Assembly in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, that a thorough investigation is underway to address the situation.
